    Basics of an Outside Wrist-lock

The outside wrist lock is one of the most basic subject control/defensive tactics techniques. It is extremely versatile and can be applied to various scenarios at mid to lower levels of subject resistance/aggresion. It is one technique that all law enforcement officers should become proficent in and add to their tool box. Applying a chest seal to your partner

Do you carry a chest seal? I carry one behind my trauma plate in my vest. I've had to apply it to a victim of a stabbing, but thankfully never on one of my partners. Accessing the chest seal was very difficult while holding pressure on the wound. In hindsight, I would recommend carrying your chest seal in a more accessible area. If you are in a budget crunch, an expired AED pad works just fine, you can get one from your training division. #policeacademy #police #DefensiveTac

Modern Subject Control in today’s Policing World

To say today’s law enforcement environment is challenging is a gross understatement.  Officers are being targeted and ambushed, the media scrutiny is at an all time high, and not many people are stepping up to do the job (understandably so). It is vital that we provide and, to a certain extent, mandate training for officers. The more comfortable officers are in handling a subject physically, the more likely they are to be able to deescalate the dynamic and unpredictable encou

After the police academy: 3 ways new cops can stay ahead of the game

Congratulations! You survived the police academy where you spent long days combining the academics of law school with the physical training of fight prep. You sacrificed time with family and friends, and made the metamorphosis from civilian to police officer. Well, almost. Now you have to get through your field training program. Every police department’s FTO program differs in length and intensity. You will need to learn your department’s “way of doing things” such as policie

Why stress inoculation is critical for police recruits

Many of today’s police recruits have never been punched in the face or held a gun, and the closest thing to a fight is when they wrestled their little brother for the television remote. However, instructors are expected in just 16 weeks to magically transform these guys and gals into new police officers. These recruits will be stationed in high-crime zones where they will be expected to hold their own. If they had good firearms and subject control instructors, they are in luc

Officers are Using Excessive Force Due to Lack of Training, Bull!

I’ve been hearing this a lot lately, “officers are using excessive force due to lack of training.” I’m hearing it from cops, retired cops, and fired cops… Frankly, I think that is false. How can you call an officer’s response “excessive” when that response is the only thing they have to offer. It is not “excessive,” it might be inappropriate, or non-optimal, but not excessive. It is the only response they have available with the circumstances. Hold on, wait, wait, wait... bef

    Ground Survival

Great performance by this officer. Some excellent takeaways: Notice the suspects timing on when he choose to provide resistance. Suspect hears the handcuffs come out and takes off. Remember, you NEED CONTROL before attempting to handcuff. That’s why I like the two thumb and waistband grip. Calling for help is vital, you don’t know when you will hit the wall and/or lose position in the fight, get that call out as soon as you can safely do so. Note how the officer almost lost

If you want to get faster, train slower

Cadets, I’m very pleased with the progress you have made in the area of Subject Control. I wanted to emphasize something that we talked about this morning at Subject Control. At the current level of exposure to new techniques our primary focus should be proper technique and form. Speed, power, etc. will be secondary. Do not rely on your youth, speed, or power when executing your technique. Focus on proper form, do not “muscle it” if you can’t get it to work. Instead, ask
